Kurnakov Andrei Ilyich
Portrait of the oldest Oryol artist-tutor K.S. Androsov
#2
In his picturesque portraits, with great love and gratitude Andrei Ilyich Kurnakov captured his teachers from the Oryol Art School, dear to his heart. Konstantin Sergeevich Androsov was one of them.

The idea of this work was born during one of the artists' meetings, when a small sketch was made, which recorded the peculiar pose of one of the oldest Oryol artists, with whom Andrei Ilyich had been linked by friendship for many years. In his portraits, the artist often depicted sitting models. He provided them with the opportunity to freely and comfortably sit in a chair or armchair, revealing the features of their individual posture.

Konstantin Sergeevich Androsov was distinguished by a somewhat bent manner of sitting with his head slightly lowered, hunching. As if warming the diseased lungs, he pressed his arms to himself, which were lowered down and bent at the elbows and the palms were directed in opposite directions.

Another small sketch from 1974, made in white and blue colors with black ink and gouache, is on display at the Andrei Ilyich Kurnakov’s Memorial Workshop. It is lined with a scale grid, indicating the further transfer of the image to a larger canvas.

The first lifetime pictorial signed portrait of Konstantin Sergeevich Androsov, created in tempera, also dated 1974, is in the Art Memorial Museum of I.E. Repin in the city of Chuguev, Kharkov region. As in the 1974 sketch, Konstantin Sergeevich is depicted in white shirt, vest and trousers, thoughtfully sitting in his favorite position on a wooden stool. In 1978, more than a decade later, when the teacher was no longer alive, Andrei Ilyich made two more portraits in tempera, one of which is displayed in the halls of the Oryol Art Gallery.

Each of the three pictorial versions of the portrait has its own compositional, coloristic features and other differences in the interpretation of the image. In the Oryol portrait, Konstantin Sergeevich Androsov is shown younger and physically stronger than in the work from the Chuguev museum. The manner of painting here is more stylized and expressively decorative in its color scheme. Over the snow-white, starched and ironed shirt, the insulated vest, favorite by Androsov, is put on, brown in front, with cornflower blue tints on the back. Strands of thinning straight hair are muted wheat. The model’s face has a half-way expression, which seems to be replaced now by a slight smile. The teacher will raise his head and say something. Maybe it will be a funny joke or a kind, encouraging word that someone needs, as was typical of him - a modest, conscientious, hardworking, polite and in all respects decent person of ‘old upbringing’.
