Ivan Gritzov was a private, sapper of the 109th separate engineer-sapper battalion of the 57th army of the Steppe front. He fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War in 1942. He was especially distinguished when crossing the Dnieper. Being the steerer and senior crewman of the first boat on the night of September 26, 1943, during 17 trips under heavy enemy fire, he transported 172 soldiers, four regimental guns, six mortars, and a set of ammunition. Then Gritzov shipped artillery, mortars, and other military equipment on the ferry. On December 20, 1943, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Ivan Gritzov was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and various Medals for Combat Service to the Homeland.
