The Portrait of Catherine II

Fedor Stepanovich Rockotov - artist - portrait artist of the second half of the 18th century. It is not known how Rockotov, being a serf, gained access to the image of the empress. It is interesting that even portraits of her sons Catherine entrusted to write Rockotov. The portrait was written in 1763, when coronation celebrations were held over the state 's accession to the Russian throne.

The portrait of Rockotov 's brush became for Catherine the most beloved and henceforth the empress ordered to portray herself, focusing on the Rockot original. The portrait was different from the usual front images, although it kept solemn and representative.

Catherine II is depicted in a profile, which is typical of antiquity and resembles the profile of a Roman emperor on coins or an antique cameo.
The empress is presented in a coronation dress majestically sitting on the throne. With a graceful gesture, she seems to appeal to a certain public - which gives the portrait momentum - an innovation for the parade portrait.
The artist wrote out each element of clothing and jewelry, having managed to unite them with color and light: parchu, silk, organza, golden sewing. Empress attire is dominated by light gentle shades. On the head is a small imperial crown, considered to be the personal property of the Empress. On top of the leaf of the dress passed the blue muar ribbon of the Order of St. Andrei the First-Called. On top of the knee there is a red with embroidered double-headed eagles imperial mantle, tormented by a mountain. These details help to convey Catherine 's supremacy and power. The solemn portrait is given by the standard front background - column and drapery.

The portrait was written from a nature, the empress liked, and the artist received the royal award - 500 rubles.
The 2017 examination proved that the copy from the portrait of Rocotov, which is in the exposition of the Vorontsovsky Palace, was carried out not by the author, but by his pupils. The nature of the letter is different. The face of the empress is more subtly spelled, wrote the skilled master. More roughly and simplistically interpreted details: hair, folds of dress, jewels.
