Sergei Tkachyov
Portrait of Atamanov
#5
Sergei Tkachyov finished his portrait of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Mikhail Ivanovich Atamanov in 1995. It sits firmly within the genre of the ceremonial portrait. The artist carefully recreated the numerous military orders and medals awarded to the soldier for exceptional bravery, fortitude and valour. Mikhail Atamanov was a frontline friend of the artist - they served together during the Great Patriotic War.

Sergei Tkachyov went to the front voluntarily in autumn 1941. After three months of training, he was sent to fight near Smolensk, where the Germans were currently bursting through the front line. The artist recalls, ‘During those years of my life, now long since past.

‘ I felt with my whole heart, unlike ever before, what true comradeship, a good song or painting truly is. I therefore wanted to paint my service friend, Mikhail Ivanovich Atamanov. Mikhail Ivanovich originally heralds from the Ryazan village of Shanchurovo. He was a talented accordionist, songwriter and incredibly funny. The man was always in good spirits, well-cut and gifted. He came to our division from the Rubtsovsk military school and served in the cadre. He was older than most of us, and an officer by rank, but this gap didn’t damage our friendship. Our company chant leader greatly brightened our lives. Often when seeing me in a gloomy mood, he would unexpectedly say, ‘Stay close to me, Seryozha, you’ll be fine, I’m lucky.’ His sincere words gave me strength. Most importantly, they meant I never felt alone. We developed our frontline brotherhood over a year. He often helped me out of different situations where my youth and lack of experience had let me down. He was an Ataman in the truest sense of the word. His surname was appropriate ‘

During breaks between fighting on the front, Sergei Tkachyov often drew his fellow soldiers. He would draw their portraits, which the soldiers would then fold into a triangle and send to their relatives. Sergei Petrovich drew his friend Mikhail Atamanov. Later the artist’s friend recalled how he carried his drawing throughout the war in his shirt pocket, and regretted that he never managed to save it for longer. Amongst other sketches from the front line, ‘Shoemaker at the Front’ is particularly important. Sergei Tkachyov completed it in 1944 with paint captured from the Germans, while the shoemaker was mending his boots. He managed to preserve it and this work was subsequently the inspiration behind the subject in ‘In Difficult Years’.
