The Ural artist Gennady Mosin mostly created oil paintings, graphic works, and book illustrations. In the late stages of his career, he took up sculpturing and created images of two famous Russian musicians, who were also his friends — the composer Georgy Sviridov and the singer Alexander Vedernikov.
With those sculptures, the artist intended to express his sincere admiration and respect for the two bright and creative people.
The statue of Alexander Vedernikov, People’s Artist of the USSR and the soloist of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre, is made of marble. In this work, Gennady Mosin captured the singer in the middle of a performance with an inspired look on his face. A bow tie around his neck adds to the artistic nature of the image.
Vedernikov was born into a peasant family in late 1927 in the village of Mokino, Vyatka governorate. He did not choose a career in arts right away: at first, he trained as a mine overseer at the Korkinsky Technical School. However, his penchant for arts made him switch to the Sverdlovsk Tchaikovsky Music College. Vedernikov received his second musical degree at the Moscow Conservatory.
In 1955, Vedernikov became a soloist with the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater named after Kirov (the modern Mariinsky Theater). Two years later, Vedernikov made his debut on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and eventually dedicated over thirty years of his career to it. Vedernikov often performed abroad: he went on tours to Canada, France, England, Iraq, and many other countries. He also underwent training at the La Scala opera house in Milan.
Vedernikov was the art director of the troupe “Russian Opera”, worked as a tutor, and belonged to the Academy of Folk Music and the Union of Theater Workers.
His achievements earned him numerous awards, including the title of People’s Artist of the USSR. He was also the winner of the USSR State Prize.
In addition to the marble bust, Mosin also made pictorial and graphic portraits of the singer. The first is kept in a private collection, the second is housed by the Irbit State Museum.
