The artist Alexander Vokhmin painted the portrait of Akhmad-Khadzhi Kadyrov in 2018. He depicted the first Chechen president in his work office, sitting at his desk. On the picture, Kadyrov is in a high-back armchair with ornate elbow rests, decorated with depictions of mythical airy creatures. There are some papers on the desk in front of the Chechen President. Behind his back are a few fresh newspapers on a carved wooden drawer. The artist used this detail to emphasize the fact that Kadyrov always did his best to follow all Russian and world news, reviewing the latest press every day.
Akhmad Kadyrov descended from an old Chechen family line. Many members of this family studied theology and occupied major religious posts. Akhmad Kadyrov got religious education abroad. He studied at the Bokhara Miri Arab Madrasah, the Tashkent Islamic Institute, as well as at the University of Jordan. However, he did not graduate from there: he had to interrupt his education in order to return to his homeland and become the Mufti (a Muslim legal expert who is empowered to give rulings on religious matters) of the Chechen Republic. He also had a non-religious advanced degree: Akhmad Kadyrov became a Candidate of Political Sciences and then a Doctor of Economics.
Akhmad Kadyrov was elected Head of the Chechen Republic administration in 2000. Two years later, he took charge of the State Constitutional Commission, which established the first Chechen Constitution.
On October 5, 2003, Akhmad-Khadzhi Kadyrov was appointed the president of the republic. Over 80 percent of the electors voted for him. However, Kadyrov had been the head of the republic for some months only. On May 9, 2004, he died in the attack at the Victory Parade in Grozny. The first president of the Chechen Republic was buried in his native Tsentaroy village. Later it was called Akhmat-Yurt. According to the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Akhmad Kadyrov was postmortem awarded the title of Hero of Russia. The medal “Gold Star of the Hero” was given to his son Ramzan Kadyrov to keep.
Central streets of all Chechen cities are now named as a tribute to Akhmad Kadyrov. There are also parks and mosques named after him not only in the Chechen Republic but also in Turkey and Jordan.
