The Ulyanovsk Museum of Local History houses a portrait of Ivan Goncharov’s mother — Avdotya Goncharova. The painting is currently located in the museum hall that recreates the interiors of a lady’s room of the first half of the 19th century.

Avdotya Goncharova, née Shakhtorina, was born in 1785 to an unwealthy family of Simbirsk merchants. When she was 19 years old, she got married to a merchant of the third guild Alexander Goncharov and became a widow at 35, left with four children — Nikolay, Ivan, Alexandra, and Anna. Avdotya Goncharova took over her husband’s merchant business, now running both the shops and the house. She was a good businesswoman and managed to provide a good education for her sons. Avdotya did not raise the children all by herself: she was joined by their godfather and a former naval officer Nikolay Tregubov. Later, Ivan Goncharov reminisced,

The kind sailor always sought our company, he took us under his wing, and our little hearts grew very attached to him… His education was not limited to only naval knowledge… He broadened his horizons by constant reading and spared no expense on the capital”s magazines, books, and brochures covering various subjects.

Despite his propound adoration of his mother, Ivan Goncharov would later recall her being a strict parent. He described Avdotya as follows,

Mother’s love was not that sentimental, animal love, which manifests in overly-emotional caresses, feeble encouragement and indulgence of every tantrum, all which in the end can only spoil children. Her love was rational: she watched our every step and divided her affection fairly and evenly between all four of us. She was exacting and never let any mischief slide without giving punishment or reproof, especially if it set a precedent for a more serious vice. She was relentless.

The news of his mother’s demise shook Goncharov to the core and became the heaviest grief of all his life. In a letter to his sister Alexandra, married name Kirmalova, he praised God for having such a mother.

Ivan Goncharov’s mother became a prototype for numerous characters in his works. According to the writer himself, she inspired the image of Tatyana Markovna Berezhkova from the novel “The Precipice”. Literary studies also linked her to the mothers of Alexandre Aduyev from “A Common Story” and Ilya Oblomov, as well as Agafya Pshenitsyna from “Oblomov”.
