Orest Timashevsky
Portrait of A.M. Bezobrazov
#2
Orest Timashevsky painted the ceremonial portrait of Alexander Bezobrazov in 1852. He copied it from the portrait of the 1820s by another artist. The location of the original and the author’s name are unknown. The year he created this portrait Orest Timashevsky got a pension from the Imperial Academy of Arts which he used to go on a trip. In 1860 became an academician.

Timashevsky painted a full-size portrait of the governor of Yaroslavl. The large size of the canvas emphasized the majesty of the image.

The French theorist of the end of the XVII century Roger de Piles said that the sight of a person on the ceremonial portrait should make the viewer stop and it should tell him:
“Look at me! I am a great statesman who knows all the springs of the state machine, because there is a great monarch there”.
#6
Orest Timashevsky succeeded in the task, depicting Bezobrazov as a noble and respected nobleman.

Timashevsky painted Bezobrazov with all the relevant attributes of power. It is a known fact that during his entire service he received very high awards – the Order of Saint Vladimir and Saint Anna, the Order of the White Eagle and the Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky. But it is impossible to identify the one on the painting due to its poor condition.

The details of the interior décor also played an important role in ceremonial portraits as well as the jewelry items and the decoration, for they conveyed information about the subject. The artist depicted Alexander Bezobrazov in the Governor’s House office and next to him there is a sculpture bust of the Emperor Alexander I.

The Governor’s house was built by the Emperor’s order in the early 1820s. It served as a traveling palace for the reigning family - the monarchs stayed in such buildings on their long journeys to get some rest. Immediately after the construction, the house became the official residence of the Yaroslavl governors. Bezobrazov hosted Alexander I there in 1823.

Bezobrazov was considered an active and selfless person. Local history expert Konstantin Golovshchikov said that under his rule ‘Yaroslavl got nearly completely renovated’. At the orders of the governor, the banks of the Volga and the Kotorosl rivers were reinforced, the streets were paved and trees were planted. He ordered to improve the Volga embankment and a number of streets in the central part of the city. There were fewer beggars during his tenure, and the taverns were allowed to sell tea – with only alcohol served in the establishments earlier.
