Felix Vallotton collaborated with the Nabi art group for a few years. The landscape Port, which he painted in Honfleur, demonstrates his talent as an illustrator. It is evident, for instance, in the composition arrangement, where clearly traced curves visually prevail over the somewhat dry colors. All of the details in Vallotton’s paintings work like symbols defining the location where the action takes place, even though the landscape itself may seem unrealistic. The artist’s attention to detail and clear-cut outlines are characteristic of many of Vallotton’s artworks, not only the “Port.” His view of life and artistic style foreshadowed some of the artistic trends that emerged later in the 20th century, in particular “New Objectivity.”
