The “Little Owl” pendant is made in the technique of champlevé enamel. Maria Klavdievna Tenisheva described this enameling technique as follows, “This method is very difficult. It is necessary to prepare large areas of the item by making hollows and depressions in the metal surface and at the same time forming convex lines between the cutout areas that make up a kind of frame for the drawing. These raised lines are sometimes so narrow that they barely make up the boundaries for two different tones, which should not merge with each other, otherwise all that hard work will be wasted.”

This small metal plate with the stamp “МТ” is shaped like an owl. The wings of the stylized owl are spread wide and decorated with dark and light blue and golden-brown enamel, separated by lines of yellow metal. The owl’s round black eyes frown from under the dark red triangle of the plumage, contrasting with the cheerful colors of its body and modestly tucked claws.

The art historian Denis Roche recalled,

… the depressions are filled with multicolored crushed enamel; in this form the object is fired, with the kiln heated up to 900 degrees. The artist must know the power of fire with the greatest accuracy in order to melt the enamel, because bubbles can form on it, it can burn, spill, and all the work will be wasted. In addition, the enamels must all be of the same fusibility, otherwise some will burn, others will melt. For an artist, the cooling process is of greatest concern, because metal and enamel do not cool simultaneously. In case of failure, that is, the appearance of bubbles, cracks and chips, sometimes one has to redo the work many times, add enamel, knock it out with great difficulty, fill in the empty areas, and trust the fire again <…> to do the rest. When the metal has cooled down and the master is convinced that there are no flaws, the item is cleaned, gilded, and polished, and the work is ready.

In 1908, Tenisheva created a kind of series of figurines called “Enchanted Beasts”. It includes the following works: “Fish”, “Swan”, “Cat”, “Pigeon”, “Pig”, “Rooster” and “Owl”. Nicholas Roerich wrote,

#5

Princess Tenisheva sought to capture the ancient and sacred essence of the hearth. She used ancient techniques to bring to life various forms of forgotten talismans, sent by the goddess of good fortune to protect the homes of men. Her set of stylized shapes does not represent her as an artist, but rather conveys her dreams of ancient talismans.
