Postcards were used to send short messages, and they cost less than regular letters in an envelope. On a card from the collection of the Belozersky Regional Museum of Local History you can see a photograph of the northeastern part of the city taken with the fire tower.
The city of Belozersk occupied an area of about 133 hectares by the beginning of the 20th century. The city was divided into 55 blocks. Most of the buildings were wooden. Of the 959 buildings in the city there were only 43 stone ones, of which 9 were state-owned -- administrative and industrial buildings. The main streets were illuminated by kerosene incandescent lamps of the ‘Lux’ system. Sixteen such lamps were installed on the streets of the city. Also, the central streets of the city - Spasskaya, Mostovaya, Naberezhnaya - were paved with cobblestone.
In the second half of the 18th century, the city underwent major changes: in 1758, the wooden fortress was dismantled, and in 1778 a plan for the development of the city was approved. The author of the plan was an architect Chicherin from Saint-Petersburg. It was decided to transform Belozersk from a settlement with narrow, curved streets into a city with clear planning. The plan was based on the location of the city on the hill, which descends to the lake with three terraces parallel to the canal on the streets of Dolnaya (modern name - Communist), Mostovaya (Sovietsky avenue) and Voskresenskaya (Karl Marx street). Perpendicular to them, the Spasskaya street, Krasny Poryadok street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street descend to the canal. These streets nowadays also bear different names. According to the plan, the wooden buildings were to be built one and two stories high on a stone foundation. Stone construction was particularly encouraged and up to three floors could be built. The houses façade had to be placed on the frontage line, and the backhouses had to be placed at one’sown discretion. City buildings in the 19th century were built on standard designs, the names of most architects are unknown.
