The Pioneer camera was produced by the Moscow artel which also manufactured ARFO cameras. Its members left the Moscow artel ‘Fototrud’ in 1933, and in 1937 it was renamed to ‘XX years of October’.

The artel produced 5 models of cameras from 1933 to 1938, which later became a part of the ARFO family. Since 1936 the artel has been manufacturing the Pioneer and Komsomolets cameras. The total number of cameras produced by the artel was 80,000 copies.

‘Pioneer’ is a simple medium format box-type camera designed for 6.5×9cm photographic plates. It is impossible to focus with this camera since the lens is set at a hyperfocal distance (fixed focus); the image could be seen on ground glass.
