Nina Skorubskaya, Honoured Artist of Russian Federation, was born in 1918 in the village of Ozeryany, Gomel Region, Belarus. She started here artistic journey at Mogilev Youth Centre Art Studio. She would later go on to study in the Faculty of Arts at Moscow Textile Institute before enrolling in the Ceramics Department at the Institute for Decorative and Applied Arts.
Despite the fact that Skorubskaya’s studies focused on the applied arts, she eventually chose to pursue painting. The artist Robert Falk was largely responsible for this decision, as he suggested that she concentrate on landscape painting.
Falk was teaching at fine arts universities with makeshift campuses in Samarkand, far away from the frontlines of the World War II. Incidentally, it was in Samarkand where Nina Skorubskaya would meet her future husband, Nikolai Sysoev.
In her works, Skorubskaya paid special attention to landscapes, one of the most traditional themes of Russian fine art. It was this genre that most fully captured her talent as a painter.
Skorubskaya created a series of lyrical landscape paintings in Lipetsk Region. She used to visit the village of Slanskoye in Lev-Tolstovsky District with her husband. This provincial area of Russia became as dear for Skorubskaya as it was to her husband, who was born there.

Lipetsk Region inspired several of Skorubskaya’s paintings over the years. In these works, the artist tried to convey an image of nature that reflected the true character of the central Russian lands. The composition and colour palette of her paintings are true and simple.
Skorubskaya’s visits to Lipetsk Region became more frequent in the 1980s. She and her husband became very active in the community. In particular, the artist made a significant contribution to the creation and enrichment of the art gallery collection in Lev Tolstoy settlement in Lipetsk Region, which opened in 1987.
