Leopold Survage’s “Landscape with a red figure” has a unique decorativeness. Its composition consists of improperly shaped geometric figures. This approach reflects the influence of late Cubism, which fascinated the artist. At the same time, his work is figurative in specific details, such as growing trees, drifting clouds, and a walking woman. According to his concept of spatial plane division, the painter uses the principle of side-scenes, resembling foldout toys for children. The bright and pure colors remind us of Survage’s studies in the studio of Matisse and his decorative gift.
