Raoul Dufy
July 14th in Deauville

#2
Raoul Dufy, whose art was associated with fauvism, was one of the most sophisticated French masters of the 20th century. Dufy worked in many spheres of art, such as book illustration, ceramics, and tapestry, but first and foremost he was a painter. He was famous as an artist of joy, able to reveal the beauty of the world around him. The landscape “July 14th in Deauville” depicts the port of Deauville on Bastille Day from a distant viewpoint.

About the dark and light blue tone
#5
The color accent of the painting is on the dark and light blue tone. It can be seen in the sky, the water, and a part of the embankment. Ships decorated with flags enliven this blue background and make the port look festive. Dufy paints contours of houses, the pointed cathedral on the shore, and ships on the water in thin, light black brush strokes. He turns the objects into an ornament, and the boundaries of color and contours often do not coincide.

About the color
#7
In Dufy’s works, color goes outside the lines. The artist once noticed that the human eye sees color first and then the contour. Using his observations, Dufy gave color a distinguished independence. The combination of decorative color with the quick and light drawing gives this painting a sense of space and moving humid air.
