Sumo wrestler Hitachiyama Taniemon

Sumo wrestler Hitachiyama Taniemon (1874-1922) is depicted here. The name Hitachiyama means ‘A mountain at dawn.’
Due to the combination of the border of the ring and the pattern on the dress, it seems that the wrestler rises to the very sky.

Hitachiyama Taniemon Thaniemon performed from 1891 to 1914. In 1907-08 he visited the USA, where, among other things, he organized demonstration performances in the White House for President Theodore Roosevelt.
