Lestovka is a type of prayer rope with a special design. They were popular in the Ancient Rus and were preserved in the everyday life of the Old Believers. Their appearance resembles a flexible ladder: the word “lestovka” comes from the Old Slavonic “lestvitsa”, which means a ladder. In Christianity, it symbolizes the steps of the Ladder of Divine Ascent. Believers used such prayer ropes to count prayers and bows during home and cathedral prayers.

The lestovka from the museum’s collection is made of velvet. It looks like a narrow ribbon braid with rollers wound across the length. The braid closes into a ring, which ends with four triangular blades, they are also called lapostki or petals. They are sewn together in pairs in the herringbone pattern. The craftsman decorated the outer side with an embroidered ornament made of metal thread, seed beads and beads, and the edges are adorned with metal sequins.

The roller steps are called “bobochki”. There should be 109 of them: these are 100 small, 3 large roller steps and 6 additional small ones — hallelujah, meaning praise to God. The bobochki for counting these praises are located at the beginning and the end, with 3 pieces on each.

The beginning and end of the prayer rope have no steps. These gaps of smooth braid symbolize heaven and earth. Then the entire length of the rope, covered with bobochki, is divided into five parts with 3 large rollers — great steps. They divide 100 small rollers into unequal parts of 12, 38, 40, 33 and 17 steps.

Such a design helps to conveniently count 40-fold or 12-fold recitation of prayers. At the same time, each number has an important sacred meaning. The 12 simple steps are the memory of the 12 apostles. The 38 is counted by the number of weeks of the Blessed Virgin carrying the Saviour. The steps from the first great to the second great step make 40, which is the number of days the Lent of Jesus Christ lasted. Then there are 33 steps — the number of years Jesus lived on earth. After the third great step, there are 17 more small ones, according to the number of the Old Testament prophecies about Christ. The strict order of the bobochki, which has remained unchanged for centuries, symbolizes the Ladder of Divine Ascent — an endless prayer road.

Other elements also have special significance. Thus, the triangular shape means the Trinity of God — the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Four petals mean four evangelists: Mark, Matthew, Luke and John the Theologian.

“The rules of church singing with znamenny notation” is one of the most valuable Old Believer manuscripts of the Kargopol History, Architecture and Art Museum. Znamenny chant was the main type of Old Russian liturgical singing. The notation means a system written with certain symbols, and it is znamenny because the entries are made with znamena — special signs.

The book is placed in a special binding made of boards covered with real leather. It can be tightly closed with two metal fasteners. When the book is folded, one can see that the connected pages are painted with red paint.

The manuscript was created by the Old Believers of the wanderer’s concord in 1878. The Wanderers are one of the Bespopovsky movements of the Old Believers. “Bespopovsky” means that these believers did not have priests. The movement had a rather radical philosophy: the Old Believers-wanderers believed that “eternal wandering” is the salvation of the soul, a break with the world, isolation from society and the rejection of any civic functions and duties.

The names of the authors are indicated on the manuscript — on a small sheet pasted between sheets 42 and 43, there is an inscription: “писал Прохоръ и Никаноръ” (written by Prokhor and Nikanor). The entry on the spine of the binding also preserved some information about the bookbinder: “Переплел мастер П. Ф. И., книга глаголемая Обиход” (Bound by the Master P. F. I., the book titled “Obikhod”).

The names of the scribes are also repeated on the back of the last sheet. A square with a triangle on top is drawn on it, resembling a house with a gable roof.

There are entries left in the drawing. The first is “Имя писавшего Прохор” (The name of the writer is Prokhor). For each letter of the name, its numerical value is written here. The second is “Писано сия книга Обиходник от Адама 7386 года и Никанора Игнатьевича” (This book “Obikhod” was written by Adam in 7386 and Nikanor Ignatyevich). The date of creation is indicated as an old calendar year 7386, according to modern chronology it corresponds to 1878.

Prokhor Ilyin was born in 1865 and lived until about 1922. He came from a family of Old Believers in the village of Muftyuga, Udora region. Passing to the Old Believers-wanderers, a person was baptized again (sometimes it was called rebaptizm). The worldly name was changed as well. Prokhor Filippovich or simply Prokhor was his new name. This eminent mentor used it to sign resolutions of the wanderers’ councils and a number of his messages to the Kargopol monks.

As a twelve-year-old boy, Prokhor, together with his aged father, went to a schismatic skete (a small monastery), where he learned icon painting skills and the ability to conduct a discourse.

He actively promoted the wanderer’s teaching in his homeland and Kargopol. Possessing the gift of persuasion, the Old Believer inspired many residents to join his philosophy and became one of the leaders of the wanderer’s community in the Kargopol Uyezd at the turn of the 20th century.
