“Silver Hoof” is one of the most famous tales of Pavel Bazhov. He wrote it in 1938, and in 1939, he published it as part of the collection “The Malachite Box”.
The main characters are an orphan girl Daryonka and an old hunter Kokovanya, who took her to live with him after her parents died. Once Kokovanya told Daryonka a legend about a goat with a silver hoof: when it stamps with its left front hoof, it leaves a gem there. The girl was so impressed by the story that she long dreamed of seeing the Silver Hoof with her own eyes and finally did meet the magic goat — right next to the forest izba (small house) where she and Kokovanya lived.
