“Silver Hoof” is one of the most famous tales of Pavel Bazhov. He wrote it in 1938, and in 1939, he published it as part of the collection “The Malachite Box”.

The main characters are an orphan girl Daryonka and an old hunter Kokovanya, who took her to live with him after her parents died. Once Kokovanya told Daryonka a legend about a goat with a silver hoof: when it stamps with its left front hoof, it leaves a gem there. The girl was so impressed by the story that she long dreamed of seeing the Silver Hoof with her own eyes and finally did meet the magic goat — right next to the forest izba (small house) where she and Kokovanya lived.

The goat jumped up on the roof and began stamping with his silver hoof. And precious stones flashed out like sparks — red, green, light blue, dark blue — every kind and color.
Pavel Bazhov described this moment

The characters, however, did not get to keep these treasures: in the morning, everything disappeared under the snow.

Based on this tale, in 2002, artists of the creative workshop “Paleshane” created a decorative panel “Silver Hoof”. It was included in the series of works made in the Palekh miniature technique, which is now exhibited in the Bazhov Hall of the Museum of Stone-Cutting and Jewelry Art History.

In the center of the composition, artists placed an illustration for the main scene of the tale: Daryonka and Kokovanya watch the goat hitting the roof of the izba with its silver hoof. In the upper part to the left, Kokovanya is depicted on his skis, and to the right is cat Muryonka playing with a goat. The background of this work, unlike most of Palekh miniatures, is not black, but green.

The creative workshop “Paleshane” was founded in 1990 with the support of the USSR Ministry of Culture. It includes artists Vladimir Bushkov, Sergey Adeyanov, Boris, Kaleria and Nikolay Kukuliev. Over 30 years, they have created the series of miniatures “The Life of Jesus Christ”, the icon series “The Life of St. Alexander Nevsky” for the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Pskov, several decorative panels for the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Washington, the Russian UN mission and the Consulate-General of Russia in New York City.
