Woodworking is one of the most ancient crafts of the Adyghe people. This is evidenced by the archaeological excavations. Artistic woodwork also includes objects made of walnut which play an important role in the life of the Adyghe. These objects are still made, although not as much as in the past.
The Adygeysk Museum of Local Lore presents a khatiyako stick with hazelnut links. The khatiyako stick is decorated with carvings and has walnut beads hanging on both ends. The stick was made by Mira Khadzhimetovna Stash, who was born in the Gabukai village and currently lives in the city of Adygeysk. This stick is one of her first works. It was donated to the museum in 1991.
Mira Hadzhimetovna Stash is a master woodcarver. She made Adyghe musical instruments, household items, wedding attributes, a baby cradle and other items.
The khatiyako stick is a staff which, like the “kyoje besh” (village stick), is an attribute of the elder. Tasks given by its beholder must be fulfilled. When the rod is held upright it means a call to action or marks a person who has the right to give orders.
At Adyghe weddings and holidays, the hazelnut stick in the hands of the khatiyako (also called the jeguako) is a symbol of power. The khatiyako oversees the event, adhering to all the rules, organizing contests, setting the rhythm of the dance and giving tasks to participants.
“Adyghe jegu” means Adyghe games. The jegu were held on various occasions: weddings, childbirths, completion of harvesting seasons, etc. It was a nationwide open-air festivity, in which the organizers of the games, the council of elders, musicians, and managers took part. Athletic competitions, horse races, performances of folk storytellers and singers could be arranged during the jegu, however, the main event always unfolded in a dance circle.
Among the Adyghe youth, weddings in national costumes with ancient rites have become fashionable again. The master of ceremonies during these events is seen with the khatiyako stick in hand more and more frequently. Such weddings leave an unforgettable impression.
