R.R. Golike and A.I. Vilborg, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Oldenburg
Children at Winter
#2
The postcard ‘Children in Winter’ depicts a boy and a girl against the background of a snow-covered village street. In the lower right corner there is a facsimile of the monogram of the author - Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Oldenburg: ‘OA 1902.’

Olga Aleksandrovna spent a lot of time at the Ramon family estate in the Voronezh province. She treated Ramon peasants warmly, often became the godmother to their children. According to the records of the Metric Book of the Nikolskaya Church of the Ramonsky District, Olga Aleksandrovna had over 50 godchildren in Ramon. She invited them to her house, visited them herself, gave them valuable gifts, helped to get an education.

Olga Aleksandrovna took care not only of her godchildren, but also of other Ramon children. At her own expense, she organized a nursery for babies in the village: they were constantly supervised there, as a result of which the infant mortality rate in the village significantly dropped. The Grand Duchess wrote to her niece Tatiana, a daughter of Nicholas II:

July 5, 1912. I am sewing a lot of shirts for children in the manger that is being set up - and I rejoice ahead because of the thought of seeing many magnificent kids in my shirts. I have found at the village a very pretty woman about 40 years old - with radiant eyes - who loves me - and loves children and seems to love everyone and everything in the world - so she manage the whole manger. We have bought baskets - we are sewing mattresses, blankets and, in general, everything is very interesting. Yesterday Nana and I talked that it would be fun if you and Olga were here - you would help and we would work a lot together - you seem to like to cut and sew on the machine too, don’t you? ’
Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Oldenburg

Olga Aleksandrovna often drew watercolors of her Ramon godchildren and other residents of the village. Later, those pictures were used to produce postcards for the Community of St. Eugenia and the Charity Society at the St. Petersburg obstetric institution. The society was founded at the initiative of the Grand Duchess in 1902. Its main goal was to help women from poor families in childbirth, as well as poor listeners of the Midwife Institute and the school under it. The design of postcards became one of important tracks of Olga Aleksandrovna’s creative activity. All proceeds from the sale of postcards went to the account of the charitable society.
