Autumn on a Large River

In his painting ‘Autumn on the Large River’ Vasily Polenov depicted the Oka river and its environments. The artist first came to see these parts in 1987 on his way back from the Crimea.
#3
‘There are nice places on the Oka near Serpukhov and further on, wrote Polenov to his wife. I wish we settled down here’.
#4
Most of all he liked a manor house near Byokhov. In 1890 the landlady of the manor house went broke, and Polenov bought out the estate. This is how the family settled down on the bank of the Oka, but that was not the end of their movements.
#5
Polenov found a new place nearby: a high sandy hill Borok. There was a beautiful view from the hill over the river and the opposite bank. The hill belonged to a local peasant community. Polenov decided to exchange Borok for a part of Byokhovo estate: he gave the peasant community two hectares of plowland for each hectare on the hill.

About the picture
#6
Polenov painted the picture in one shot, using his sketch technique with fast brushstrokes. The paint layer is so thin, that the matt white undercoat is grinning through in some places and large canvass grains are visible. Despite this is an autumn landscape, azure and blue tone colors prevail instead of traditional autumn yellow and red keys. Blue and azure are the river, the sky shadows and darkened places, and also the distant hills. Small yellow isles next to deep blue colors have a light shade of green due to visual pigment mixing.
#9
Polenov worked mostly with imported extra-strong paints. He handed over their names to Isaak Levitan, a disciple of his, and from him the list got to the followers of the latter. The list got lost over the course of time, but is still remembered by artists as ‘the Polenov’s palette’.
The artist painted his “Autumn on the Large River” in the last years of his life. From 1917 through 1927 he resided in Borok without leaving. Many young artists used to visit Borok, and even village children used to come there to learn painting.
#10
Polenov turned his house into a public art gallery. Now there is a museum preserve here dedicated to his life and creative work.
