Vitaliy Leus
Autumn on Lake Baikal
#2
Vitaliy Leus created the Autumn on Lake Baikal painting in 1986. At that time, he went for a creative trip to the Baikal cost. Leus lived in an artistic dacha for three months, and in this period, he created a great number of sketches, which later became the basis for several large paintings.

There is almost no sky on the Autumn on Lake Baikal painting. The artist raised the horizon line too much so that the Baikal Mountains on the background could look more massive and monumental. But they are not pressing on viewers, the landscape is full of light and air. This feeling was created by the artist with the use of contrasting shades, i.e. cold lilac and subdued mustard.

The calm colouring of the picture conveys the atmosphere of an early autumn: dim sunlight, coolness. The mountains in the distance are covered with light haze. Overtones on the lake waves add more light. The water surface of Lake Baikal occupies only a small fragment of the painting, separating the foreground and background of the picture with a narrow stripe
Leus elaborated small elements, i.e. trees on the background, elevation difference of the pictured terrain, shadows from objects and even individual blades of grass in the foreground. However, the houses in the distance and the figure of a person on the right side of the painting look small, almost imperceptible, in comparison with the mountain range, the shore and the lake. The elements only animate the landscape and emphasize its splendour.

Landscapes and portraits were the main genres in the work of Vitaly Leus. He painted both famous people in Soviet times - top military, party leaders, war heroes - and ordinary urban and rural residents. The main role in the artist’s landscape works was played by the colouring. Leus was very careful in the selection of colours, creating calm lyrical views of nature.

Vitaliy Leus studied painting in Lugansk. Later he moved to Belgorod, where he resided permanently since 1968. The artist became one of the authors of the memorial complex, which was opened in Belgorod to commemorate the heroes of the battle of Kursk. His wall carvings decorate the southern facade of the memorial. For this work, Vitaly Leus received the Lenin Prize - one of the main Soviet awards in the field of art. Now the paintings, created by Vitaly Leus, are kept in the museums of Belgorod, as well as in private collections of Russian and French collectors.
