Leontiy  Zudov
Operators of Nadym
#12
Artist Leontiy Zudov depicted Nadym gas production department in his painting Operators of Nadym. This department was in charge of developing Medvezhye gas field – one of the biggest sources of natural gas in West Siberia.
#13
The painting is very dynamic: the artist depicted a briefing where the participants are discussing an important operational issue. Some characters are monitoring the instrumentation, others are recording the readings, and others are talking on the telephone or with each other. All of them are inside the control room, which looks cramped due to a big crowd of people. There are no curtains on the windows, so industrial buildings and polar night landscape can be seen: hips of snow and the polar light.
#14
The color palette of the painting is built on contrasts. Zudov painted the view from the window in cold dark tones to convey the severity of Siberian climate. On the contrary, the room is depicted in warm colors contrasting the night landscape.
#15
Leontiy Zudov created his pieces in the spirit of Russian realism. He travelled a lot across the USSR, visited Krasnodar territory, the Urals, Kazakhstan, Lake Baikal. The artist made many sketches during his trips, and then used them to paint lyrical landscapes. The artist worked a lot with the colors trying to convey various nuances. He believed he needed to impregnate his paintings with light and air.

In addition to landscapes, Leontiy Zudov painted portraits. He tried to convey not just physical resemblance, but the mood and emotions of the model. Relatives and friends often posed for the artist.

However, Zudov preferred genre painting. He recreated both historical events and the everyday work of his contemporaries — oilfield workers, village dwellers, workers from plants and factories.
