The beaver has two fangs or incisors on the upper jaw, and two incisors on the lower jaw. Behind, there is a cavity with no teeth, and further on, molars are located, to grind small branches and bark. This is why the surface of the molars is very rough.

Ancient people used halves of a beaver’s lower jaw as a nature-made cutting tool: the front teeth were the blade, and the bone shaft served as a hilt. The jaw has three processes: coronoid, articular and wide angular process at the end of the jaw. Usually the coronoid process was broken off, because it made it difficult to hold the tool securely when working. Its stub and all protruding parts were carefully smoothed, and then polished with a piece of soft leather. Sometimes the articular process was removed, if it was too long.

Over time, when the incisor that served as the front blade of the tool, wore out, the tool was not discarded but turned into a planing knife. For this, the lateral canal of the incisor was opened, and the freed edge of the incisor was sharpened. Over time and after many sharpening corrections, the cutting knife often became a scraping knife used to scrape wood or animal bones.
Beavers came to the forests of the Middle Urals after the retreat of the glacier. The meat of this animal was the basis of the diet for people who lived in the Stone Age. Beaver skins and fur were used for sewing clothes. Hunting beavers was not difficult. First, people broke the dam, and the sensitive animal forgot about caution and immediately set about restoring it. The hunters lay in wait for the beaver and killed it with a blow of a club.
