The white-tailed eagle is the largest bird found in Udmurtia and the fourth largest bird of prey in Europe. It is a member of the family Accipitridae. It occupies the territory of Central Europe, Scandinavia, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan. In Russia, the white-tailed eagle occurs in wooded and grassland areas. It usually lives near large bodies of open water, such as lakes, rivers, or coastal areas. Birds that inhabit north areas migrate to the south to winter there while birds living in south areas remain in their habitat or occur as vagrants.

White-tailed eagles start to mate in their 4th year. They pair for life. During dozens of years, a pair inhabits the same territory of about 25-80 km where the birds build its nest, hunt and attack intruding males. White-tailed eagles nest in tall trees and sometimes on cliffs. Nests are usually large and solid, constructed of sticks and branches. Birds lay not more than three large white eggs. The female may do all the incubation alone but sometimes the male of a pair can participate as well.
As endangered species, the white-tailed eagle is registered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation. In 2013, the Russian Bird Conservation Union declared the white-tailed eagle the bird of the year. Poaching considers the main threat to the white-tailed eagle. People shoot birds for hunting purposes or for the production of taxidermy items. Mass deforestation, fires, lead poisoning in the places of birds hunting for water and semiaquatic birds cause them great damage as well.
