Vladimir Kurochkin was born into an artistic family in 1955 in Yoshkar-Ola. In 1970, he finished an art school for children, and in 1977 graduated from the Cheboksary Art School. After serving in the army, he was invited to teach at the Yoshkar-Ola Art School, where he works to this day.
In 1990, Vladimir Kurochkin turned to the theme of the Mari Autonomous Oblast and its formation. This question arose immediately after the October Revolution, and in the summer of 1920, at the All-Russian Conference of Mari Communists in Kazan, a concrete plan for the organization of the autonomous territory was discussed, and the heads of government and management bodies along the state and party lines were chosen. To report to the central government on the wishes of the Mari people to create an autonomous region, Sergey Alekseyevich Chernyakov went to Moscow, at that time he was in charge of the Mari Central Department at the People’s Commissariat for Nationalities.
The decree on the formation of the autonomous region of the Mari people was adopted and signed by the Chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars Vladimir Lenin and the Chairman of the Central Executive Committee Mikhail Kalinin. This document had important political significance: for the first time in its history, the Mari people obtained statehood, even though it was in a limited form of regional autonomy. The date of adoption became a holiday for the Mari. On March 1, 1921, the “opening” of the Mari Autonomous Oblast was solemnly celebrated, and the Mari poet Shabdar Osyp wrote a poem, one of the lines of which read: “Rejoice, the working Mari people // Today is your holiday! // Now the Mari Autonomous Oblast has been created for you…”

The entire surface of the canvas is occupied by a crowd of people, it flocks to and stands on a square of a small town, near a stela crowned with a red flag, entwined with a festive ribbon. A group of speakers at the foot of the stela attracts the attention of the crowd. The figures of people, especially in the background, are not painted in detail, but simply outlined. Among them, we can distinguish soldiers with bayonets on their rifles, soldiers on horseback, and children. In this diverse crowd, people react differently to what they have heard. We can see their reaction to the news in their poses and in the expressions of their faces: from sheer joy (a boy in a gray hat) to rejection and doubt (the people in the center). To the left, separate from the crowd, there is a lone figure of a young man standing with his back to the people. His calm pose and a light smile represent the future of the Mari region.
