Scientists believe that these are tree fern imprints. They are approximately 300 million years old. Archaeologists have discovered the sandstone in the Sharkansky District of the Udmurt Republic.

During the Carboniferous Period of the Paleozoic Era, 360 million years ago, forests were strongly waterlogged. A huge area was occupied by shallow seas and coastal waters, which often flooded low-lying coastal plains. This way, numerous swamps were formed. The humid climate was favourable for enormous tree ferns, as well as for the Lycopodiophyta and the Equisetophyta plants. The trees were able to grow up to 45 meters tall.
Due to this high humidity in the environment, early amphibians and insects began to evolve: cockroaches, huge dragonflies, silverfish, termites, beetles, spiders, millipedes, and scorpions. The vegetation was growing extremely fast, and the soil microorganisms were unable to feed and decompose at the same pace. This vegetable matter shortly started to form deposits of peat, coal, oil, and gas.

Today, ferns are found in all countries of the world. Most of them grow in the rainforests of the Amazon, Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua and many other countries. They thrive under trees, as well as on their trunks and branches.

Since ancient times, the fern has been considered a natural amulet and appreciated for its medicinal properties. Sometimes the Slavs linked superstitions with this plant. It was believed that anyone who saw a blooming fern would become the richest person in the world. Only later did our ancestors realise that the plant never bloomed. Modern people use ferns as food, and also for decoration of flower beds, arbors, and lawns.
