In the 1960s, Chuvash artists were increasingly attracted to the themes of labor in collective farm fields, at factories, and construction sites. It is from this perspective that the painters sought to reveal the creative passion of people, their collectivism, and friendship. Nikolay Prokofievich Karacharskov is one of those painters. In the visual arts, he acts as a guardian of realistic traditions of Russian painting, stemming from the Wanderers. His works are clearly influenced by the “austere style” aesthetics, Soviet romanticism, and formal socialist realism.
Nikolay Karacharskov was born on February 14, 1935, in the village of Shadrikha, Chuvash Republic. He graduated from the Cheboksary Art College. In 1955, he began working as a painter in the Chuvash creative and production workshops. Karacharskov was the head of a creative group of artists known as “Countryside Dawns”, whose efforts brought folk art galleries to the republic’s rural areas.
Most of his narrative compositions resemble portraits: they feature no abstract themes or random characters. He finds his heroes in real life and paints them from life, as they are in a particular situation and a specific environment. This is the vital truth of the painter’s artistic imagery.
Such is the history of the creation of the painting “We Made the Papers”. The artist often visited the newly developed areas, where he made sketches and painted studies. Once, while searching for the right composition for a future painting at a construction site, he met an all-girl team of the best construction workers. Just as the painter was working on the images of the girls, their foreman Raya Morozova brought the news: “Girls, we made the papers!”. That was the moment that made the basis of the plot. An upbeat teamwork atmosphere, the enthusiasm of youth — all that can be seen on the canvas.
