In the years following the 1917 revolution, the Zlatoust Arms Factory became part of the Lenin Mechanical Complex. In the 1920s, it mostly dealt with decorating hatchets, paper knives, cutlery, and personalized gift weapons.
The art department of the Zlatoust City Museum of Local Lore displays an all-metal table knife. The blade of the knife is flat and wide, rounded at the end. The knife has traces of sharpening. At the same time, part of the blade is completely worn off.
The oval handle is smooth. The blade near the edge was engraved with an inscription “Stainless steel Zlat. tool. factory. 1933”. The knife is made of stainless steel, the production of which was first mastered in the country at the Zlatoust plant in the mid-1920s.
After a series of unsuccessful experiments, the foreman of a new open-hearth shop, Pyotr Stepanovich Tyutyov, at his own initiative, smelted stainless steel in the first electric steel-smelting furnace of the plant. He was the first to achieve that in the Soviet Union, which spared the country from having to buy stainless steel abroad.
At the time, a well-known journalist and later playwright Nikolay Fyodorovich Pogodin visited the Urals. He created a series of sketches for the Pravda newspaper, the first of which, “Yuzh-Ural”, was published on September 27, 1927, followed by “Guns” and “Near the Molten Metal”.
Among other things, Pogodin spoke about the achievement of the Soviet worker. Later, on the basis of that material, he wrote one of his first plays, “The Poem of an Ax”, which was a great success at the time. In the play, a worker named Stepan melted the steel and made pincers out of it, which, as he himself states, “were stolen by some halfwit, ” but the problem was that Stepan forgot the composition. Still, in the end, the alloy was recovered.
Stainless steel found its application in shipbuilding and production of equipment for the chemical industry. At the Zlatoust Tool Plant named after Vladimir Lenin, the production of stainless-steel knives and cutlery was launched. The first products from Zlatoust stainless steel are now a rarity.
