The icon was written in the 19th century by tempera (based on egg yolk) on wood. Nicholas the Wonderworker is depicted in accordance with iconographical canons: waist high with a closed Gospel Book and an omophorion (a scarf ornamented with crosses) across his left hand. These details highlight that he was a Bishop.
Saint Nicholas wears a cross-shaped phaelonion – long wide religious clothing with no sleeves ornamented with crosses. Bishops and patriarchs wore such clothes. Red and gold colors attach solemnity to the icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker. The red color symbolizes Divine Blood spilled for the sinners and memory about this sacrifice while the gold color represents dignity and majesty. On either sides, Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary sit on clouds. They are often depicted on icons together with Nicholas the Wonderworker.
