The icon was written in the 19th century by tempera (based on egg yolk) on wood. Nicholas the Wonderworker is depicted in accordance with iconographical canons: waist high with a closed Gospel Book and an omophorion (a scarf ornamented with crosses) across his left hand. These details highlight that he was a Bishop.

Saint Nicholas wears a cross-shaped phaelonion – long wide religious clothing with no sleeves ornamented with crosses. Bishops and patriarchs wore such clothes. Red and gold colors attach solemnity to the icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker. The red color symbolizes Divine Blood spilled for the sinners and memory about this sacrifice while the gold color represents dignity and majesty. On either sides, Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary sit on clouds. They are often depicted on icons together with Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Saint Nicholas was considered protector of the deprived, travelers and mistakenly convicted to execution and imprisonment. Seafarers risking their lives during storms pray to him. A reason for that is the hagiographic description of his sea-voyage.
As a young man, Nicholas travelled from his hometown Mira to Alexandria where he had to continue his education. A storm broke out on the way and one of the sailors fell from the mast and died. Nicholas the Wonderworker prayed so sincerely that God heard his prays and resurrected the sailor.

The story has another version: Nicholas saved the sailor on his way from Alexandria and took him as a worker to his church. There in another legend connected with Nicholas the Wonderworker. He wished to pray in a Palestinian church at night. The church was closed but Nicholas easily got inside – the doors threw open before him. Ordinary people thought Nicholas was God’s chosen and this explains many miraculous stories about him. He was loved for his compassionate heart and willingness to support and patronize.

The Orthodox consider that Saint Nicholas helps to accept Christ by faith and to ward off bad luck from the loved ones. Three dates are celebrated in connection with Nicholas the Wonderworker: his death day on December 19, memory day of the Transfer of the Relics of Saint Nicholas to Italy on May 22 and Birthday of Saint Nicholas on August 11.
