The history of the badge “For Excellent Shooting” began on May 22, 1879, when Emperor Alexander II established it by the Highest decree.

Until 1909, the badge “For Excellent Shooting” (“For Excellent Rifle Shooting”) had only one degree (class). It was a round disk made of bronze with relief circles symbolizing the target, with an inscription around the circumference “For Excellent Shooting” and two crossed rifles superimposed on the target.

On August 19, 1909, by the Highest Decree of Nicholas II, three classes were introduced. From the “Instructions for Shooting Rifles, Carbines and Revolvers” dated April 22, 1914:

The badge for excellent shooting of the lower ranks has three degrees:

a) The badge of the first (highest) degree features the monogram of the Sovereign Emperor, with the Imperial Crown at the top, surrounded by a ribbon with a convex inscription “for excellent shooting”, two crossed rifles and images of a round target at the bottom. ˂…˃

b) The second degree consists of a circle of yellow metal, 20 times smaller in size than a round target, with two rifles crossed on the surface of it and with a round convex inscription of the same color “for excellent shooting”.

c) The third (junior) degree has the same circle, only of white metal, and with the same inscription as the one on the badge of the second degree.

The badge was to be worn on the right side of the chest. Each class was awarded only once. If a soldier was awarded badges of two or three degrees, he was obliged to wear all these badges — one above the other (while the badges were connected to each other by three-link chains).

In the Russian Empire, the badge “For Excellent Shooting” was one of the most common badges. It cannot be ascertained how many such badges were produced. Various factories and workshops manufactured them, so it is almost impossible to establish their exact number and names.

In the USSR, the badge “For Excellent Shooting” was introduced in 1922. It was analogous to the imperial award. Design-wise, it was a circle with a relief inscription “For Excellent Shooting”. Two crossed rifles (Mosin rifles) were mounted on top of this base. The abbreviation U.S.S.R. was placed between their barrels.
