On October 29, 1932, the Central Committee of the Osoaviakhim (Society for the Assistance of Defense, Aircraft and Chemical Construction) of the Soviet Union approved the honorary title “Voroshilov Sharpshooter”. On December 29, 1932, a badge with the same name was established to award the most accurate shooters.
After some time, the program of Voroshilov shooters became a mandatory element of state-wide civil defense training.
In 1934, the 2nd class of the “Voroshilov Sharpshooter” badge was introduced. The requirements for obtaining the badge were tightened.
The badge “Young Voroshilov Sharpshooter” was also created to award pioneers.
In 1934, the first in the USSR Voroshilov Sharpshooters’ club was opened in the Baumansky district of Moscow. Members of this club represented the Soviet Union at international competitions. They competed with the American Portsmouth Rifle Club and won in a fair fight. The USSR team managed to earn 207 points more than the US team.
In 1941, when the Great Patriotic War began, the badge was abolished.
The badge is rather detailed. The main part is a round medallion covered in white enamel. On the left, its border is made to look like a gearwheel that features the inscription “OSOAVIAKHIM” (Society for the Assistance of Defense, Aircraft and Chemical Construction — a Soviet socio-political defense organization that existed from 1927 to 1948, the predecessor of DOSAAF). On the right side is an ear of wheat.
The central place is occupied by a five-pointed star covered with ruby enamel. It shows a shooter aiming a rifle. Above is a scarlet banner with an inscription in gold letters — “Voroshilov Sharpshooter”. Below is a white target with black circles. The badge of the 2nd class has the number “2” written on the target. Roman or Arabic numerals were used.
There were several versions of the badge. On one of them, the target is a separate element, on the other it forms a single whole with the base. On the back there is a screw for attaching it to the clothes.
The badge “Young Voroshilov Sharpshooter” is a bit
different. The star with the shooting man was replaced by a pioneer bonfire.
“Young Voroshilov Sharpshooter” is engraved on the badge.
