The badge “Sniper” was established for those who showed particularly outstanding performance in shooting, personal weaponry and camouflage on 21 May 1942.

In accordance with the Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces, the badge “Sniper” was awarded to privates and junior commanders of the Army and the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs who showed particularly outstanding performance in shooting, possession of personal weapons and other technical means, who competently applied their skills in combat, accurate and rapid fire with causing losses to the enemy, skillful camouflage.

Despite the lack of official documents to the badge, certificates to it were still issued. They could be filled out on a typewriter, by hand or typed. The badge was awarded in a solemn atmosphere. The awards were announced by an order.

The Volgograd Regional Museum of Local Lore keeps and exhibits the badge “Sniper” of Alexander Marinin, the participant of the Stalingrad battle.
