Shaimiev’s awards. Belgian Order
#2
Award of the First President of the Republic of Tatarstan M. Sh. Shaimiev. Belgian Order for Merits in Promoting Inventions.

The President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev received the Order of the Honorary Officer of the Belgian Chamber of Inventors for “merits in promoting inventions” and for his contribution to the investment and innovative development of the economy of Tatarstan.

The International Exhibition of Inventions “Brussels Eureka” took place in the capital of Belgium on November 16~20, 2005. The delegation of Tatarstan, headed by the Prime Minister of the Republic Rustam Minnikhanov, took part in it. The organizers handed over this prestigious award to Shaimiev via representatives of the region.

The order is a star that consists of golden rays. It bears the blue insignia of the order. There is a golden reared lion with claws and a protruding tongue in the centre of the medallion. It is a symbol of courage and generosity. There is a motto written in a red circle around it: “TANTAE MOLIS ERAT” is a quote from the poem “Aeneid” by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. The phrase is translated from Latin as “it was so difficult”. At the bottom centre the date in Latin numerals MCMLIV – 1954 is placed.

The Chamber of Trade Unions for the Protection of Inventors was founded in 1875 in Belgium. It is the world’s oldest organization dedicated to promoting and protecting inventors and innovators. In 1901, the organization became a part of the Brussels Chamber of Commerce.

In March 1952, the first International Exhibition of Inventors was held, organized by the Chamber of Trade Unions. The event was supported by the King of Belgium and became a springboard for many commercial successes and for conclusion of a large number of contracts. Since 1993, the Chamber of Trade Unions for the Protection of Inventors has been officially called the Chamber of Inventors of Belgium.

Shaimiev was born in 1937 in Aniakovo Village of the Aktanysh Region of Tatarstan and grew up in a traditional family. He graduated from the Kazan Agricultural Institute, worked as an engineer, and then began an administrative career in the Tatar Regional Committee of the CPSU. Shaimiev served as the President of the Republic since 1991 till 2010. During this time, he received a huge number of awards and medals, including the Belgian Order, the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the Order of Honour ‘Al Fakhr’ of I Degree, which are also kept in the museum’s collection.
