Tamara Gavrilova
Jug from the drinking set “Olympic”
#2
The “Olympic” water set consisted of a jug with a lid and two glasses. Tamara Gavrilova created it in 1980 for the Summer Olympic Games that were held in the USSR. The artist of the factory, Tamara Gavrilova, had chosen the shape of a torch with a tapering lower part and a flaring upper part of the jug. The silhouette symbolized the Torch relay, which was held every time before the Olympic Games since 1936.

The symbolism of the competition was enhanced by vertical orange stripes on the sides of the jug and blue-gold laurel branches. In the center, Gavrilova placed the Olympic emblem — six rings and a high-rise building crowned with a star.

Traditionally, the Summer Olympic Games were held from mid-July to mid-August. In 1980, they were held in the USSR for the first time and this was an important event in the life of the country.

Most of the games, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies, were held in Moscow. In addition, sports complexes in other cities also hosted some events: for example, the sailing regattas started in Tallinn, the preliminary games and quarterfinals of the football tournament were held in Kyiv, Leningrad, and Minsk, and bullet shooting competitions were held at the Dynamo shooting range in Mytishchi, near Moscow.

The opening of the Olympic games took place on July 19, 1980, at the Central Stadium named after V. I. Lenin (now Luzhniki), and the closing ceremony was held there on August 3. The final of the competition had a special scenario: first, the white Olympic flag was slowly lowered to the sounds of the anthem. Then the girls dressed in tunics approached the bowl with the Olympic flame: they formed a composition resembling an ancient Greek fresco. The flame in the bowl was slowly dying out and the image of the Olympic Bear appeared on the screen made of painted shields. The inscription “Good journey!” appeared, and a tear rolled out of the bear’s eye. In the final, the orchestra entered the arena of the stadium, and then the athletes entered the field, synchronously doing exercises typical for their type of ports.

Due to the entry of Soviet troops into Afghanistan in 1979, more than 50 countries boycotted the Olympics, so some athletes competed under a neutral Olympic flag. Four years later, during the next Summer Games, the Soviet Union responded by boycotting the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
