The solid foundation of the Ural jewelry school lies in a deep understanding of the interplay between metal and stone — an intuitive sensibility nurtured in those who have grown up among the Ural Mountains. While honoring the traditions of the old masters, contemporary Ural jewelers actively incorporate fancy-cut gemstones and ornamental stones with striking natural patterns. Their works consistently captivate exhibition visitors — they are distinctive in style, instantly recognizable, and always in demand.
Modern advancements in jewelry production call for a thoughtful response to evolving styles and fashion trends, allowing jewelry to reflect the individuality and character of its wearer. This awareness has fostered a systematic approach to design, rooted in the creation of harmonious, expressive forms. Yelena Vladimirovna Zheleznova and Aleksey Borisovich Popov are among the leading figures in contemporary Ural jewelry art.
The work on display titled “Kama” is a set of jewelry pieces for men. Comprising a ring and a pair of cufflinks for dress shirts, the set is crafted from nielloed cast silver and jasper. Though conceived as an exhibition piece, it possesses the elegance and presence to serve as a refined status accessory. The name “Kama” draws inspiration from the Kama River, one of the region’s most iconic waterways, and from the rich red-brown hues of the jasper inserts. Contrary to the typical blue associations with water, the artists chose earthy tones that mirror the actual color of the river in its upper and middle reaches — where the water takes on a warm tint due to suspended particles from the surrounding geology: clay, loam, and sand.
Rectangular jasper plates in silver settings adorned with rosettes serve as restrained yet powerful color accents in both the cufflinks and the multi-tiered, intricately designed ring. The works of Popov and Zheleznova transcend traditional jewelry, evolving into objects of art design. Their use of vivid, naturally patterned stones as focal elements pays homage to the core principles of the Ural jewelry school — where the stone is not merely embellishment, but the soul of the composition.
Conceived and crafted by the Yekaterinburg artists Aleksey Popov and Yelena Zheleznova, their innovative collections continue to grow, with each new piece deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of their native city and the enduring beauty of the Ural landscape.
