Artist Magomed-Bashir Ozdoev is a recognized master of decorative and applied arts. He draws inspiration from the real towers in the mountains of Ingushetia — and creates their replicas out of stone. In his works, the artist accurately reproduces the surrounding landscape and all elements of the ancient architecture.
The displayed replica represents ‘Lyalakh’ — a large village tower in the Chulkhoi gorge located 1700 meters above sea level. It is believed that its construction began in the 16th century. The first settlers chose a strategically advantageous place; it is protected on all sides by natural fences: on the northwest, the territory is bounded by a ravine with a stream, on the south — by the steep bank of the Chulkha river. On the east, the village is surrounded by a shallow ravine, and on the north, there is a hill range and Mount Tsey-Loam.
To protect the settlement from enemy attacks, the inhabitants of Lyalakh built three battle towers in the lower level. They were built without a foundation, and the base was reinforced with huge boulders — some of them exceed human height. On the replica, their elegant silhouettes are immediately visible; they are higher than all the other buildings. In reality, each of them reached 26 meters in length — this height is approximately equal to a modern nine-story building. Unfortunately, the western (left) tower is in ruins. In 2008, it collapsed; only two floors were preserved.
Above the combat fortifications, under their cover, the builders erected 22 residential buildings. These towers mainly included 2-4 floors, but they were also very big: about 14 meters in height — like a modern five-story house. They were built with a flat roof and a parapet, and wooden platforms-walkways were added to them so that they could easily get from one tower to another.
In reality, all the towers of Lyalakh are made of large rectangular stone blocks held together with lime mortar. Legends say that the residents received high-quality building materials from many rich relatives in the Galgaev society: on holidays, they presented Lyalakh with large, well-crafted stone blocks.
Many famous Ingush families lived in Lyalakh: The Lolokhoevs, Musievs, Zeitovs, Evloevs, Dobrievs, Sukievs, Timirbievs, Cheborzievs, Shadyzhevs, Gogievs, and others. According to historians, famous architect Arsmak lived here. He built many stone buildings not only in Ingushetia but also in the neighboring regions of mountainous Georgia and North Ossetia.
