The Museum of the History of the Resort City of Sochi presents a model of the sculpture composition “Matsesta”, created by the sculptor Iraida Yakovlevna Gusleva (1926–1979) and installed in 1967.

Iraida Gusleva graduated from the Leningrad Higher School of Art and Industry named after Vera Ignatyevna Mukhina. After that, she arrived in Sochi and began working in the workshops of the Art Fund. Gusleva’s works include many sculptural portraits and monuments. One of her most special works is a sculpture named “Matsesta”, made in a unique manner. This sculpture was carved from locally sourced, dense light-colored sandstone and was harmoniously integrated into the hillside by the architect.

Legends about the incredible healing properties of the hydrogen sulfide springs near Sochi have been around for centuries. One of the ancient legends about Matsesta says,

#4

When a daughter was born to the mountaineer Kerenduk, the moon was reflected in the mountain river like a flame, and so Kerenduk named his daughter Matsesta, which in the mountain dialect meant ‘fire water’. The parents loved their daughter dearly, and Matsesta responded with care and attention. When her parents fell seriously ill, Matsesta learned from an old man about a magical underground spring that could heal them. She entered the cave, where it was, and engaged in an unequal battle with the evil Spirit of the Depths, who guarded the healing spring from people. The brave girl defeated the evil spirit, opening the way for the spring to benefit humanity. However, she paid for this victory with her life — her bright and kind soul dissolved in the ‘fire water’. Ever since then, the healing water that brings health to people has been known as Matsesta, named after this beautiful and brave girl.

The name of the spring, which is consonant with the name of the mountain river Matsesta flowing next to it, also reflects the property of Matsesta water to create a slight burning sensation on the skin, causing reddening in the area immersed in the water. The Matsesta mineral water deposit is supported by a unique hydrodynamic karst system that is connected to both atmospheric recharge areas and the sea, following the principle of communicating vessels. This system receives fresh water from the surrounding areas and seawater from the sea, resulting in a balanced hydrodynamic equilibrium. Based on this hypothesis, the Matsesta hydrogen sulfide mineral springs are considered practically inexhaustible.
