The exposition of the Severodvinsk Museum presents a model of a project 627 submarine — it was the first Soviet nuclear-powered submarine. The model is made in scale 1:400. The length of the vessel is 107.4 meters, width — 7.9 meters, immersion depth — 300 meters, armed with torpedo, and the number of crew is 104 people.
On September 9, 1952, the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the creation of the first Soviet nuclear-powered submarine, signed by Joseph Stalin, was issued. The scientific supervisor of the work was a Soviet physicist, academician Anatoly Aleksandrov, the chief designer of the installation was the power scientist Nikolai Dollezhal, the chief designer of the boat itself was shipbuilder, design engineer Vladimir Peregudov.
A few years later, a resolution was adopted to start building a submarine on the stocks of the shipbuilding yard in Molotovsk (as Severodvinsk was then called). This choice was justified by the geographical location of the plant and a good technical base. The shipbuilders laid down the boat on September 24, 1955 in workshop No. 42 of shipbuilding yard No. 402 (Sevmash), and by the end of 1955 they had completely built the entire hull.
In 1956, the installation and commissioning of equipment began, the installation of nuclear reactors was especially difficult — this was done for the first time. The reactors were launched in September 1957. A year later, on July 4, 1958, an atomic submarine for the first time in the USSR gave way under a nuclear power plant. Later, in 1962, it went down in the history of Russian shipbuilding with the name ‘Lenin Komsomol’.
In 1962, for the first time in history, the boat made a long voyage under the ice of the Arctic Ocean, during which it twice passed the point of the North Pole. Under the command of Lev Zhiltsov, on July 17, 1962, for the first time in the history of the Soviet submarine fleet, she surfaced near the North Pole. In the area of surfacing, the crew of the ship hoisted the State flag of the USSR — this was of great strategic importance. Subsequently, the boat served in the fleet for several decades and was withdrawn from service only in 1991.
