In the exposition of the Severodvinsk Museum, you can see a model of a Project 941 nuclear-powered submarine — the largest in the world. It is listed in the Guinness World Records. The length of the vessel is 172 meters, width — 23.3 meters, diving depth — 320 meters, and the number of crew — 160 people. The boat is armed with torpedoes, anti-submarine guided missiles, and most importantly, the ship carries 20 ballistic missiles with a range of 8,300 km.
The officers in such a boat are accommodated in two- and four-seater cabins, and the sailors and foremen — in small cabins. The ship gave comfortable conditions for the crew: there is a swimming pool, sauna, gym, lounge for relaxation. In total, six Project 941 boats were built at Sevmash, all of them were brought together into one division, which is part of the Northern Fleet. Due to the large size of the vessel, the division’s base had to be re-equipped and new berths built.
The world’s largest submarine was created for the world’s largest underwater ballistic missile. The level of domestic technologies of the 1970s–1980s did not allow the manufacture of a solid-fuel ballistic intercontinental missile in small dimensions.
The design of the boat is made as a catamaran: two separate strong hulls located parallel to each other. They are connected by transitions and have a single lightweight outer casing. The hull contours in connection with this design differ from previous projects — it is “flattened” in the vertical plane. During the construction of the ship, the task of expanding the zone of its combat use under the ice of the Arctic was solved. The deckhouse has ice reinforcement and a rounded lid to facilitate surfacing in ice. This made it possible to break through ice up to 2.5 meters thick.
To date, three nuclear-powered submarines have been withdrawn and dismantled from the fleet, and a decision is being made on two more. The first ship of Project 941 was subsequently modified and equipped with the new Bulava missile system. In 2002 it was named Dmitry Donskoy — now the ship is in service.
