A representative of ethno-futurism, Yury Dyrin worked on the cartoon “Kouigorozh” as part of the project “The Mountain of Gems” at the “Pilot” studio. The cartoon, based on a Moksha folk tale, won the “Golden Eagle” film award, and became the highlight of the Republican animated film festival “The Mountain of Gems” in Saransk. The film also got the audience award at the animated film festival in Suzdal. Yury Dyrin is a regular participant of international, all-Russian and interregional exhibitions. Solo exhibitions of the artist have been held in Saransk, Prague, Moscow, Tallinn, Magdeburg and Stavern (Norway). His works are displayed in the Stepan Erzia Museum and in private collections in Russia, Finland, Norway, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom.
One of the features of the art of the late 20th — early 21st century is the increased interest in ethnic archaicism, which enables peoples to preserve a colorful emotional identity. This has brought about the development of the ethno-futurism movement, which combines ethnic and exotic as well as avant-garde forms.
In the work “Milky Way” Yury Dyrin delves into the intuitive inner image of historical existence. The artist calls his style mythmaking. He reveals his closeness to the original national worldview, creating his own imaginary world, mythical and fabulous. The composition is built on rhythmically alternating dark and light horizontal stripes, which symbolize the circle of agricultural work, integrated into the rhythm of the universe. Yellow, light ochre and light brown tones enhance the feeling of closeness to the earth as the main center of the Mordovian peasant’s worldview, as the source of eternal life. Schematic iconic images of cows, goats, elks, birds, wolves and foxes indicate that they have surrounded the Mordovians in their mythological perception of life since ancient times.
