During the repeated attacks by the enemy tanks on August 8, 12, and 17, Kostin’s heroism encouraged the soldiers to repel attacks. On August 12, the company commander, Junior lieutenant Akhmetev, died, and Kostin headed the company. At the critical moment of the battle, he managed not only to defend the won positions but to move forward. At the same time, two tanks were shot down and more than 40 enemy soldiers were killed. Before crossing the state border, Kostin conducted great party and political work and prepared the personnel for a quick advance. The 5th company, in which Kostin was, defeated three ambushes numbering up to 50 Nazis. When the company commander died, Kostin took command, with exclamations “For Motherland, for Stalin” and the company beat up to 120 resisting Nazis, chasing and destroying them all the way to the state border. This company was one of the first to reach the state border. In the battles on the border, the company commanded by Kostin destroyed over 50 Nazis, captured 3 machine guns, 5 assault rifles, 3 pistols, and many boxes of ammunition. For the skillful organization of the party and political work, for his direct participation in the battles with the German invaders, and his heroism, Kostin deserves the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
