The title ‘Honorary Citizen of Krasnodar’ was established on July 10, 1964. It is bestowed upon those citizens who have outstanding merits in various areas. The first person to receive this title was a native of Krasnodar Krai, the Soviet cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko. He received the Medal of Honor on December 12, 1969.
At different times, among the honorary citizens of Krasnodar were the writers Viktor Likhonosov and Vitaly Bakaldin, the composer and accordionist Grigory Ponomarenko, World War II heroes Alexander Pokryshkin and Evdokia Bershanskaya, the cosmonaut Gennady Padalka.
On July 19, 2012, Heinz Fenrich, a citizen of Germany and mayor of Karlsruhe, received an honorary title and commemorative medal. He visited Krasnodar as part of a city council delegation. He also received insignia, including a commemorative medal ‘Honorary Citizen of Krasnodar’. Other members of the delegation received other awards. In this way the authorities decided to strengthen the friendship of the two cities — Krasnodar and Karlsruhe, which have been twin towns since 1997.
Before his departure, Heinz Fenrich gave his medal as a present to the Krasnodar Museum named after E. D. Felitsyn to commemorate his visit and the friendship of the twin cities.
The memorable award ‘Honorary Citizen of Krasnodar’ in the collection of the Krasnodar State Historical and Archaeological Museum is stored in a medal box that protects it from damage. It consists of two elements: the medal itself and the top bar.
On the obverse of the round medal is a colorful image of the coat of arms of the city of Krasnodar. At the bottom of the circle there is an embossed red inscription ‘Honorary Citizen of Krasnodar’. There is a relief image of Empress Catherine II on the other side of the medal, and below there is a green inscription ‘Krasnodar — Ekaterinodar’.
The medal is attached to the top bar via a special suspension ring. The award is covered with white and yellow enamel — the same colors are used in the flag of Krasnodar. On the backside, there is a pin clip that can be used to attach the award to the clothes. The medal box is lined in blue velvet inside and outside.
