Lyubov Kozyurina
The Birch Grove
#8
Lyubov Egorovna Kozyurina is a professional artist and a talented painter. She was born in 1940, in the village of Glebovka, in Omsk region. She has lived in Mezhdurechensk since 1955. She took evening classes for adults in the city’s School of Art, and graduated from the N.K. Krupskaya National Extramural University of Art, in Moscow. Lyubov Kozyurina paints in several different genres, including scenes of daily life, portraits, still-lifes and landscapes.

Her favorite subject is the incomparable and very specific landscape and nature of the Mountain Shoria region. Her style is characterized by her determination to portray the unearthly beauty of the Siberian forests, mountains and rivers, and the captivating charm of the forest margins and woodland paths. The clear water and air, the scarcely-noticeable breezes, the tender spring greenery and the fiery colors of autumn — all these beauties are captured on canvas by this talented landscape painter. Her works are admired for their profound poetic sensibility and spiritual character.

In the painting The Birch Grove, the artist depicts a landscape that is close to the hearts of all Russians. It is hard to take one’s eyes away from the elegant birch trees depicted on the canvas with such love. When looking at them the viewer seems to hear the rustling of their leaves and fell a slight breeze. In her work the artist’s uses a simple, bright palette. The work is dominated by vivid tones which contrast with their background, such as emerald greens and the fiery yellow used for the globe-flowers. The silver birch trunks stand out against the dark grass, emphasizing their purity and refinement. The canvas is filled with harmony and a romantic sense of excitement, emotions which the artist communicates to the viewer through her work. The calm, static composition creates a lyrical mood and fills the viewer with a sense of love for the natural world.

It is impossible to imagine a Russian forest or field without small groups of birch trees like the ones that Lybov Kozyurina depicts in this work. The birch tree is the symbol of the Russian landscape. It is the subject of many popular songs, proverbs and expressions. Poets have celebrated birch trees in their works, and artists have painted them.

This tree takes its name from the old Slavic goddess, Beregani. In ancient times the Slavic peoples saw the birch as their totem tree, ancestor and protectress. People decorated their houses with the tree’s branches to protect their loved ones from evil spirits.

In the plains of Mountain Shoria the birch tree has long considered a sacred tree. These trees, more than any others, were believed to be able to bring people’s petitions to the attention of the spirits.

In Lyubov Kozyurina’s painting we see another plant which is loved by the inhabitants of Mountain Shoria — globe-flowers. The bright orange flowers are often referred to as ‘little flames’. Or, as the locals call them, ‘our Siberian roses’. In Russia’s temperate latitudes they are called “sleigh bells” and in the North they call them “tassels”. And the official Latin name for these flowers has a fairy-tale sound to it — Trollius., In this work the artist vividly conveys the beauty of her region.
