‘Chronicle of the War of 1914-1917’ is a military journal that served as one of the main official information sources about events of World War I in the Russian Empire. This weekly illustrated periodical was published throughout almost the entire war, right up to the overthrow of the monarchy in Russia. A total of 132 issues of the ‘Chronicle…’ were published.
Major General Dmitry Dubensky was the editor-in-chief of the journal. He was born in 1857, graduated from the Aleksandrovskaya military school and the Mikhailovskaya artillery school. He was promoted to officer in 1880 and was sent to serve in the 3rd Grenadier Artillery Brigade. In 1884, he entered the Academy of the General Staff, did not finish the course, and in 1885 moved to the General Staff, where he served until 1904, when he was appointed a staff officer for assignments under the Chief of the General Staff.
Since 1914, Dubensky was in the emperor’s retinue as an official historiographer. Because of his publishing experience, he organized the issuing of the “Chronicle of War”. The journal was printed in the printing house “R. Golike and A. Vilborg Partnership” in St. Petersburg. The main goal of the “Chronicle…”, according to Dubensky, was a complete and comprehensive clarification of the meaning of events and hostilities, the establishment of an internal connection between them and a broad reproduction of the phenomena of war in artistic drawings, portraits, maps, and plans.
The title of the magazine changed according to the year: “Chronicle of the war of 1914”, “Chronicle of the war of 1914-1915”, “Chronicle of the war of 1914-1916”, “Chronicle of the war of 1914-1917.” Each issue contained at least 16 pages, had numerous photographs, drawings, portraits, plans, maps, and sketches. The material in the magazine was divided into sections: The official part (orders, circulars, instructions, etc.), official reports from the war, articles explaining the state of affairs, correspondence from the war, war repercussions in Russia, various notes and articles about military events and in relation to them, the attitude of foreign powers, announcements.
