The art of Sergey Romanovich is based on the concept of conflict as the foundation of the universe. He used frenetic and thick brushstrokes that created the feeling of a continuous and sometimes even chaotic movement in his paintings. The main subjects of his art were myths and Bible stories. He interpreted them as metaphors of reality, constantly returning to one and the same images. All men in his dynasty, except for his father, were members of the clergy, and Sergey had a special perception of religion and relationship with it since early childhood.

Sergey Romanovich was born in the Zamoskvorechye District. His father was an inspector of orphanages in the agency of Empress Maria Feodorovna. His mother Sophia Nensberg, whose father was Swedish, became Sergey’s first teacher. In 1909, Romanovich enrolled at the Painting Department of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture where he studied for eleven years. His teachers included Konstantin Korovin, Nikolay Kasatkin, and Abram Arkhipov.

Sergey Romanovich cooperated with Mikhail Larionov, one of the founders of the Russian avant-garde. His art included a wide variety of styles and subjects. The artist enjoyed painting portraits but was equally passionate about still lifes choosing unconventional subjects such as mallows in a coffee pot, dead fish, a garden bouquet in a pot, or sunflowers in the style of Van Gogh. He admired Titian, Rubens, and Delacroix whose influence can be observed in his genre and abstract scenes.

The painting “Boat in the Storm” was purchased from the artist’s daughter Natalya in 1984. The Sea of Galilee is also known as the Kinneret and the Lake of Gennesaret. According to the Bible, it formed the border of the Land of Israel, and Jesus spent most of his earthly life on the coast of this sea.

The main element of this painting is color. Sergey Romanovich believed that to develop the art of painting, it was necessary to understand the nature and secrets of color. He described it in detail in his book “The Finest of Arts”:

Art is quite simple if you have a key to it. It has always been the same. It was the same for the Dutch painters, the Ancient Greek and Roman painters, and everyone else.
