Ural jewelers share a profound and distinctive relationship with stone. For them, the gemstone is not merely a decorative element, but the very heart of the creative process: it shapes the concept, guides the design of the setting, and defines the overall aesthetic of the piece. This philosophy is perfectly illustrated in Vladimir Mikhailovich Vasilkov’s pendant series dedicated to the seasons, where the stone itself forms the artistic core of each work.
The piece on display is titled “Autumn”. It comprises a chain and a pendant. The chain is crafted from asymmetrical links of twisted wire, forming elegant upward curls. From it hang three smaller vertical curls that lead the eye to the pendant itself: a captivating piece of mottled jasper, neatly framed and featuring a distinctive white field at its base.
Jasper is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz, primarily of sedimentary or volcanogenic-sedimentary origin, that has undergone metamorphism. Its name originates from the Greek word “iaspis,” meaning “spotted stone”. Jasper is prized for its high decorative value, making it a popular choice in jewelry and decorative arts. In addition to its beauty, its remarkable strength also makes it suitable for technical instruments (prisms, mortars, rolls) and elegant interior design features.
Among the many varieties of jasper used in jewelry, picture jasper holds a special place. Characterized by its variegated designs in deep brown and other dark tones, each pattern is entirely unique. Its markings can be simple or remarkably complex. Some of them look like figures, trees, or even entire landscapes. The patterns include incredibly rich and diverse color palettes.
In the “Autumn” pendant, the jasper combines warm brown and soft beige tones, with whimsical spots converging into a recognizable scene. Within this natural canvas, one can make out the bare branches of a tree against a gloomy autumn sky heavy with clouds. The pattern evokes late autumn — a time when the foliage has fallen, the air turns crisp, and nature settles into a quiet stillness in anticipation of winter. The chain, featuring twisting curl-shaped links, further accentuates this motif of gentle decay. Together, these elements harmonize to create a poignant tribute to the season.
