This Crucifixion of Christ is a pectoral cross. The word comes from the Latin ‘pectus’, chest. It was worn on a woven cord or chain, over or under clothes. Cross is the most common symbol in Russia.

This pectoral cross was cast from a copper alloy in the 19th century. The craftsman made it according to the tradition of Old Believer casting. In the upper part of the cross there is an image of the Mandylion, the Savior Not Made by Hands. In the center of the cross, there is a symbol of Calvary Hill, where Jesus was crucified. At the foot of the cross, there is Adam’s skull symbolizing the atonement of the human sins.

The Crucifixion of Christ is one of the Pomorye copper cast crosses, which is indicated by its eight-pointed shape. The development of Pomorye casting is closely connected with the Church Dissent of the 17th century and the persecution of the Old Believers. In this century, Nikon became the patriarch and imposed reforms, bringing new rites into the Orthodox Church. The authorities began to persecute people who were opposing these changes, so the Old Believers were forced to flee and to escape in the Pomorye forests. In exile, they managed to keep the ancient customs, texts and iconographic traditions intact.

In 1722 to 1723, Peter the Great issued decrees that prohibited the manufacture and sale of copper icons and crosses. Only miniature pectoral copper crucifixes were allowed, but their number was limited. However, copper smelting developed in spite of the authorities. For about 160 years, the Old Believers, who lived in hermitage huts in the woods, continued to cast prayer crosses, hinged and plain icons, so that in exile one could pray even without churches and priests. Thanks to the Old Believers, the copper-cast images and crosses were not completely lost.

Such crosses differed from New Believer crosses because they carried large numbers of decorative elements. The surface was filled with curly shoots, convex curls and geometric details such as dots, stripes, triangles. The top of the cross was chiseled; it depicted angels, seraphs and cherubs. The multi-colored enamel coatings virtually became the original signature of the Pomorye craftsmen.

Deities where Jesus Christ was the central figure, and church feasts, namely The Resurrection of Christ, Descent into Hell, Assumption of the Virgin, became popular plots of these icons and crucifixes.
Copper was used both for miniature and large crosses. For coatings, craftsmen used yellow, green, blue, brown and even gilt enamel. The talent and perseverance of Pomorye casters and enamellers brought them people’s love. Thanks to the ingenuity, craftsmanship and affordability of their works, they soon gained followers who spread the Pomorye applied art throughout Russia.
