Since ancient times, the cross has been venerated as one of the most important sacred objects. It is the most renowned symbol of Christianity. There were crosses of different types in Solvychegodsk, including altar, exalted, blessed, pectoral, and sanctuary crosses. They varied in shape, size, and artistic technique.

This is an eight-pointed cross made of oak. All eight ends of the bars feature plaques made of gilded silver. In the center, on the dark brown wooden surface, there is a cast image of the Crucifixion.

The seven-pointed cross of the Crucifixion fits into an equiangular triangle. It symbolizes Golgotha — the sacred mountain where Jesus was crucified. The upper horizontal bar features an engraved inscription “ЦРЬ СЛА” meaning “the King of Glory” and the middle bar — Christ’s initials “IС ХС”.

The Crucifixion is flanked by two cast metal plaques with relief half-length images of four saints, two on each side. On the upper crossbar, there is a cast image of two flying angels. At the top, there is a cast Image of Edessa soldered to the silver plaque, and at the bottom crossbar — the image of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker with a relief inscription “Nicholas”.

On the obverse side, the six silver square plaques decorating the ends of the bars feature large engraved calligraphic inscriptions. The silver plaque at the bottom of the cross is smooth.

On the reverse side and at the ends, all silver plaques are white and smooth, and on the front side, they are gilded. All the cast images on this cross, including the Crucifixion, are similar to the cast details attached to the 1596 cross from the Solvychegodsk Presentation Monastery.

The cross is also similar to other crosses made by Stroganov craftsmen in the late 16th — early 17th centuries. The details of such crosses were often cast using one mold and then chiseled. Such a wooden cross with a light thin beam and branches imitated earlier works.
