The photo depicts the Krasnoyarsk railway station. At the end of the 19th century, the railway connected the city with the central part of Russia and the Far East. That became a key factor of economic development for the Yenisei province and an important event for its people. For they were able to travel faster and more comfortably: send their children to study and make business trips.
The railway station in Krasnoyarsk was built in 1895. The project of the building was developed by the architect Nikolai Solovyov. In total, 40 thousand rubles were spent on its construction and, as it turned out later, not in vain. The railway station was rightfully considered not only one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, but also a real symbol of Krasnoyarsk.
The first train, consisting of 20 cars, arrived at the Krasnoyarsk railway station on December 6, 1895. The ‘Yenisei’ newspaper then reported on the event that was significant for the entire region: ‘Long before the arrival of the train, people began to gather, and by 3 o’clock more than half of the entire population of the city was crowding and moving in anticipation of the train.’ People greeted slowly the train as it moved slowly towards the platform with shouts of ‘Hurrah! ’. A military band accompanied the event with brave marches.
Since then, the local press covered the station on a regular basis. There were articles in the newspapers about the telephone set up in the station lobby, about swindlers to be wary of, and about many other issues related to the new place in the city. Journalists of that time were also outraged by the fact that there was only one inkwell with a pen in the waiting rooms and the arriving passengers lined up to use it. But there were also a lot of complimentary articles. In particular, it was said that the Krasnoyarsk railway station began a new era in Siberia.
The brick and stuccoed station building was richly decorated. Its area was more than 200 square meters. The building had several first and second class waiting rooms, a storage room, and a cafeteria. The station became a local landmark. Many townspeople in the early 20th century visited it as a place of recreation and entertainment: they went to the cafeteria, looked at the trains, and walked on the platforms.
The new station building was erected in 1961, and at the beginning of this century, it was reconstructed. The project of the new building was developed by architect Andrey Kasatkin. In December 2004, during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the updated station was presented to the public. Today, its area is even more impressive — 12.300 square meters.
